On the farm

Our trip to the Philippines included a trip to the farm - a community development project that started over 20 years ago. It was an incredible experience seeing how a whole community has come out of their poverty level and is sustaining the work themselves. The project also included a BOOST program which included a two to three month training in agriculture, animal husbandry, health and sanitation, well drilling, and chronological bible storying. (BOOST = Baptist Out of school training). People from all over Asia have come to the farm to learn techniques that will better their lifestyles.

One of the animal husbandry projects is an odorless pig farm. Wow, I have never seen cleaner pigs and they absolutely had NO odor. They are in individual "cement" cages with water access. Someone washed up after them any time they "go". The feces is being used to make some kind of gas that will be used for something else. Here is a close up picture of one of the "Porky Pigs!"

Back from the Philippines

Well, we are back from the Philippines. I wanted you to see where we were in relation to the Philippines. First you have to find Singapore, right? Okay, you can see Cambodia, can't you - in the pink? Go left from there and down that side "arm" until you are in the dark green Malaysia. Are you with me? Okay, right at the tip of that dark green, if you look closely, you will see Singapore. Now, the Philippine Islands are in red. They are farther away than you think. All in all, it took us five hours of flying time to get there. The Philippines is made up of 7000 islands but only 700 of them are inhabited. The Philippines was settled by the Spanish and if you hear or read their language, you can hear alot of Spanish influence. The Philippines have a strong Catholic background. This is where Magellan was finally killed (FYI!)

The Philippines reminded me so much of Sierra Leone. The people were friendly. The towns were so similar (only they had electricity). The Filipino people have combined Catholicism and their traditional beliefs just as the Sierra Leoneans have combined Islam with their traditional beliefs. There were some really striking parallels.

Over the next few days I will be telling you all about my trip - so hold on!

A Room with a View

I am excited about filling you in on a few major things that have happened this week. Rick's employment pass was finally approved! PTL! That means that we can now open a bank account, sign a lease on an apartment, get a credit card, etc. Now all we have to do is to fill out the dependent application (for me) and send it in. There should be no problem in mine being approved since Rick's was.

The second bit of news is that we finally have an apartment! As you know, we looked at several apartments all day Monday in three apartment complexes within walking distance of each other. Although the other couple here with us didn't find anything they wanted, Rick and I narrowed the choices down to two by Tuesday. Our real estate agent was able to negotiate a good deal for us and yesterday she informed us that we had a deal!

The two bedroom apartment is less than 1000 square feet (good thing Rick and I were planning on downsizing!). There is already some furniture in the apartment and the landlord is willing to move out a few pieces to make room for our own things. I have to tell you that the apartment is gorgeous! I will post pictures of it soon. The complex is very resort looking and includes several swimming pools, a tennis court, a gym, and a small 7-11 type store right on the grounds.
Now that Rick has the employment pass and we have an address, we can proceed to have our things from West Africa shipped here. No one knows how long that will take so it is good that we are walking into a furnished apartment. I will still have to buy a few kitchen things (dishes, a few pots and pans, towels, etc.) to get us through until our things do arrive.

Now that we have an address, you can start making your plans to come and see us!

Apartment hunting

Saturday Rick and I finally met our real estate agent (Iris) to look at some apartments here in Singapore. Since one of our families (not coming until June) has a child still in school, we thought it was important to locate somewhere in close proximity to the school. That is on the west part of the island and also where rents are a bit cheaper than on most other parts.

After researching for hours (if not days since we got here)I found three apartment/condominium complexes in the same general area (within walking distance of each other). With three different complexes (total of more than 1000 apartments/condos, surely we could find two. We won't need the third one until just before June. I sent our agent the three complex names and she arranged for some "viewing" of available apartments in two of them.

We met her there at 9:30 on Saturday morning. The first complex was absolutely beautiful. It is a "low rise" meaning it only goes up 6 stories. The first apartment we looked at was on the sixth floor. It was immaculately clean and freshly painted. It had three bedrooms and was fully air conditioned. Now here in Singapore, "partially furnished" means it includes a fridge, washing machine, and possibly a microwave. This one was just such a deal. All the windows were ceiling to floor giving lots of light to the place. Being up high gave it a wonderful panoramic view of the area.

The kitchen was small. Kitchens here are usually not very big because not much cooking goes on in Singaporean homes. Everybody EATS OUT alot. By the way, did I mention that there is no oven! (This was true for all the apartments we looked at except for one. IF you are going to need that, you get a "toaster oven" for the counter space!

The back porch or "yard" as it is called here was where the laundry is done. It also included a "maid's room". It is no bigger than a walk in closet. Those who can afford it (and need it) hire a maid (usually from the Philippines) to do their house cleaning and be a nanny to the children. There is also a bathroom in the "yard". (No, we won't be having a maid here!)

Counting the bathroom in the "yard" - there were three! Oh, I forgot to say that the "maid's room" would also make a great storage room for us. We still have lots of Chelsea's stuff among our shipment and will need a place to store that until we can get it to her.

This apartment complex had a large pool, a wading pool, a spa pool, gymnasium, tennis court, sauina room, and club house. (It is nearly like a resort!) Very impressive (and just another reason why we LOVE living in Singapore!)

We looked at two other apartments in this complex and they were all very similar. Some were cleaner and had a fresh coat of paint. Some needed painting. Some were more "partially furnished" than others, but all in all, this still remains a great option for us.

The second complex was across the road, putting it within walking distance of the first one. (By the way, the first complex is two bus stops for the school, so this is a great option for our family with a child still in school.) The second complex was even more "resort-like" and was a high rise (I think it had 24 floors.) The first one we looked at was on the 19th floor. What a view! All of the windows were ceiling to floor letting in all the morning sun. (This is important to know because the afternoon sun can be a killer PLUS run up the electric bill trying to cool the place.)

I LOVED the kitchen - it was an open kitchen concept - meaning there was just a small half wall separating it from the dining room/living area. This one was just a two bedroom - about 900 square feet of living space. But it included a "safe room" (I'm not sure why) which could be used as a store room/pantry. Still no oven, but there was a great brand new stove top with a grill!

The amenities were about the same - pools, gym, etc. And there was a small "7-11" type store right on the premises. We were, needless to say impressed. We looked at three apartments in this complex.

Now - what do we do? Well, first of all, we have decided that these three complexes are certainly what we are looking for so Iris is arranging to look at more apartments here on Monday. We will meet our other team members there so they can look as well. Hopefully, in the next week we can decide on something and sign the papers for our new living space.

At that time, we can have our stuff from West Africa shipped here. Now, who knows how long it will take that to get here. Could be a few weeks (doubtful) or a few months. No one really knows for sure. We haven't seen that "stuff"in nearly three years so it will be interesting just opening up those boxes. We have already decided that we will definitely have to "downsize" to live in the small spaces we have available here but are willing to do so.

Our goal is to have the apartment rented before we leave for the states in February so when we come we will definitely have PICTURES! Since we are not sure when our "stuff" will get there, we will also have to buy a few things like bath towels, kitchen towels, sheets, etc. We will go ahead and get a bed and are even thinking about getting some living room furniture. We gave away everything but our couch and a bookcase before we left West AFrica so in many ways we are "starting over" in the furniture department.

I will certainly keep you updated on all of this so you can pray me through it! I feel like a newly wed!

Another reason why we LOVE living in Singapore

Yesterday Rick and I spent the day discovering a new mall. We are looking for a desk chair for me and have been doing some comparative shopping. Anyway, we decided to take in a movie about 4:30. Have I told you about the movies here? Well, they are up to date with the ones on in the U.S. pretty much. But that said, they are SO much better.

1. You can actually get your movie tickets online and just pick them up at the theatre.
2. You have to CHOOSE your seats (like at a play or the opera). So you can make sure you have the seats of your choice.
3. The theatres are very nice - very comfortable chairs with plenty of leg room. People can walk in front of you to get to their seats without you having to scrunch your knees up.
4. At the concession stand, you have two choices of popcorn - salty or sweet. The sweet is a light version of cracker jacks. So good. OR you can have a mixture of sweet and salty.
5. Yesterday during about 15 seconds of the movie the picture went off but the sound kep going. During the credits the management came on the loud speaker and apologized TWICE. Then someone met us at the exit door with FREE PASSES to another movie of our choice! Wow.
6. Haven't experienced this yet but there is also a Gold Classic theatre which offers reclining seats and a menu! They BRING you your orders!

What a great day, except the desk chair I wanted is out of stock until March! Boo hoo!

My Christmas Tree is STILL UP!

Happy New Year! Can't believe it is already four days into 2008 (twenty oh eight, as they like to call it here!) Hope your new year has already been adventuresome and that your knowledge of Him has already increased!

Rick and I stayed home on New Year's Eve after our "crowded" Christmas Eve experience on Orchard Road! It was nice to watch the fireworks from our window in our pajamas!

I still haven't taken my Christmas tree down. Just can't bring myself to do it. Rick bought some purple beads back before Christmas. I think I will add those to the tree and just celebrate Mardi Gras while I have it up! What do you think?

Rick bought me alot of local magazines for Christmas so I have had fun sifting through those. Most of them are about activities here in Singapore. I am ready to get ACTIVE. In fact, I attended my first Bible study this morning. It is just a three week "course" on the book of Ephesians but we meet from 9:30 - 12. The speaker is very good and it is nice to be with other women. I was invited to join a ladies' cell group, too, so that was exciting. It won't begin meeting until the last week in January. I will be out of town then but hopefully, will get started in it the first week of February.

Rick and I have also signed up for a Precept course on Genesis at a local church. We will only get to attend 3 of the 7 classes but couldn't pass up the chance to study my favorite book Precept style!

We are still receiving a few Christmas cards. Thanks to those who paid the extra to get them all the way to Singapore. Some of your cards that you sent to the Nashville address may have been returned. Sorry. For some reason the U.S. Post Office did not recognize that as our "valid" address, although our daughter lives there. So if they were returned, please send them to our Brownsville address. If you need that, email me.

We continue to discover the city on a daily basis!

Added a pic of our two college kids!
